Six things to check before you commit.

• What are new and used vehicles actually going for right now?
• What is the current interest rate, and what down payment will you need?
• What is your current car worth on a trade-in?
• What would insurance cost on the replacement vehicle?
• What is your comfort level with a monthly payment for the next four to six years?
• And the big one on a used vehicle: are you buying someone else’s problem?

That last risk is the one nobody prices in. A used vehicle comes with a maintenance history you cannot verify and hands you cannot vouch for. The car you already own has a history you know.
